Justin Anderson poised to join Dubai Basketball from Barcelona ahead of 2025-2026 season

In a move that is already creating ripples across international basketball circles, American forward Justin Anderson is reportedly set to leave FC Barcelona and sign with Dubai Basketball ahead of the 2025-2026 season. The transfer, which has yet to be officially confirmed by either club, highlights Dubai Basketball’s growing ambition to become a serious player in the global basketball market, while also marking a new chapter in Anderson’s globe-trotting career.

For FC Barcelona, the departure of Anderson signals the end of an intriguing experiment. Since joining Barcelona in 2023, the 31-year-old swingman brought with him the grit and athleticism honed during his years in the NBA and various stints in the EuroLeague. While not always a starter, Anderson was a valuable rotation piece, known for his defensive tenacity, ability to guard multiple positions, and knack for hitting timely three-pointers. His energy and veteran presence were crucial in the locker room, especially as Barcelona navigated a transitional period under new management and younger players stepped up.

Anderson’s time with Barcelona was marked by flashes of brilliance. He delivered memorable performances in key EuroLeague games, often tasked with guarding the opponent’s best wing player. Despite this, injuries and stiff competition for minutes meant he never fully cemented himself as an indispensable starter. Yet his professionalism and commitment won him respect from coaches and fans alike.

His move to Dubai Basketball represents more than just a new address — it’s symbolic of the UAE’s strategic investment in basketball. Over the past five years, Dubai has aggressively pursued the sport, aiming to position itself as a hub for elite-level hoops in the Middle East. The franchise, which competes in the West Asia Super League (WASL) and aims for a spot in the expanded Basketball Champions League Asia, has steadily attracted top-tier talent from Europe and North America. Signing a player of Anderson’s pedigree is a clear statement that Dubai Basketball wants to accelerate its rise.

Anderson’s experience could be transformative for the club. Known for his work ethic and ability to adapt to new systems, he is expected to play a major role both on and off the court. Dubai Basketball’s front office believes that his defensive versatility and leadership qualities will help elevate the team’s performance and inspire local players who look up to international stars. There is also a marketing dimension to his signing; having a recognizable American face who once played for the Dallas Mavericks, Philadelphia 76ers, and Atlanta Hawks gives the club more clout as it seeks to expand its fan base and sponsorship deals.

For Anderson, this move is another chapter in a career that has defied easy categorization. A first-round pick in the 2015 NBA Draft, he showed promise early on with the Mavericks but struggled to find a long-term home in the NBA, bouncing between teams and splitting time in the G League. His decision to embrace opportunities overseas revitalized his career. In Europe, he has developed a reputation as a true pro — a player willing to do the dirty work, adjust his game for the team’s needs, and lead by example.

At 31, Anderson still has plenty to offer on the court. His physical style of play, combined with improved shooting from deep and a willingness to take on tough defensive assignments, makes him a valuable asset for any coach. Dubai Basketball’s fans can expect to see a player who leaves everything on the floor, whether it’s diving for loose balls or locking down scorers on the perimeter.

Beyond basketball, Anderson’s move highlights a broader trend of veteran American players exploring lucrative opportunities in emerging markets. With the NBA and top EuroLeague teams increasingly competitive, well-funded clubs in the Middle East and Asia are becoming viable alternatives for players who still want to play at a high level while enjoying generous salaries and lifestyle perks. For Dubai Basketball, securing Anderson’s signature sends a clear message to rivals in the region: the club is not content to merely participate — it wants to dominate.

As the 2025-2026 season approaches, all eyes will be on how Anderson integrates into his new team and the impact he can have on Dubai Basketball’s trajectory. His signing could pave the way for other high-profile moves, further strengthening the club’s reputation as a destination for serious talent.

For now, fans in Dubai will be eagerly awaiting the first time Anderson steps onto the court wearing their colors. If his career so far is any indication, they can expect hustle, heart, and moments of brilliance — exactly what a rising club needs as it seeks to make a name for itself on the i

nternational stage.
