🚨🧨 Real Madrid STILL WANT Ibou Konaté from Liverpool, as potential free transfer for 2026. 👀

Real Madrid’s long-standing interest in Liverpool centre-back Ibrahima Konaté is far from over. According to sources close to the Spanish giants, Los Blancos are keeping close tabs on the French international with an eye toward a bold move in 2026—when his current contract at Liverpool is due to expire.

Konaté, 25, has established himself as one of the Premier League’s most dominant defenders since his move from RB Leipzig in 2021. While he’s yet to fully displace Virgil van Dijk as the Reds’ defensive leader, his speed, power, and anticipation have earned him regular starts and a crucial role in Jürgen Klopp’s (and now Arne Slot’s) plans. But that may not be enough to keep him on Merseyside indefinitely—especially with Real Madrid circling.

A Long-Term Plan at the Bernabéu

Real Madrid’s defensive unit has seen a mix of youth and experience in recent years. David Alaba, Antonio Rüdiger, and Éder Militão have all been key contributors, but with Alaba’s injury struggles and Rüdiger now in his 30s, Madrid are already laying the groundwork for the next generation.

That’s where Konaté fits in perfectly. Tall (6’4”), athletic, and technically sound, the Paris-born defender ticks all the boxes for Madrid’s ideal centre-back. And the fact that he may become available on a free transfer in 2026 adds to the intrigue. Florentino Pérez and the Madrid board are increasingly interested in building through free agency, as seen with the signings of David Alaba and Antonio Rüdiger—both of whom arrived on Bosman deals.

A free transfer for Konaté would represent smart business and a low-risk move for a player with a high ceiling, especially if Liverpool struggle to extend his contract over the next 12–18 months.

Liverpool’s Dilemma

From Liverpool’s point of view, losing Konaté for free would be a significant blow—both in footballing and financial terms. They invested around £36 million in 2021 to bring him to Anfield, and his market value has since grown considerably. Letting him walk away without a fee would be a major loss for the club’s recruitment model, which relies on balancing smart purchases with timely sales.

As of mid-2025, there has been no confirmed extension for Konaté, and Liverpool haven’t publicly prioritized tying him down long-term. That could soon change with the arrival of new manager Arne Slot, who is likely to see Konaté as a pillar of the team’s future.

However, the Reds are also rebuilding, and contract decisions will be weighed against the club’s wage structure and potential reinforcements in defense. If Konaté’s camp senses hesitation from Liverpool, that could open the door for Madrid—or even other European giants—to swoop in.

Konaté’s Perspective

While Konaté has never publicly agitated for a move, the idea of playing for Real Madrid could be tempting. For any French player, the allure of joining the most successful club in Champions League history—especially one with a tradition of top French talent like Zinedine Zidane, Karim Benzema, and now Eduardo Camavinga and Aurélien Tchouaméni—is undeniable.

Moreover, by 2026, Konaté will be 27 years old, entering his prime as a defender. A move to Madrid at that stage could offer a perfect combination of personal ambition and competitive success.

Still, Liverpool provides him with elite-level football, Premier League exposure, and a passionate fanbase. Much may depend on how the next two seasons unfold under Arne Slot. If Liverpool return to title contention and offer him an improved contract, staying could remain an attractive option.

A Waiting Game

Real Madrid, for now, are simply watching and waiting. With no rush to sign a centre-back in the immediate transfer window, they are reportedly content to monitor Konaté’s contract situation throughout the 2025–26 season. Should negotiations stall between him and Liverpool, Madrid are ready to open pre-contract talks in January 2026—six months before his deal ends.

Whether Liverpool act now or risk losing a top-tier defender for nothing remains to be seen. But one thing is clear: Konaté is on Madrid’s radar, and if the stars align, the Frenchman could soon be donning the famous white shirt of Los Blancos.
