Espanyol’s Spanish goalkeeper Joan García is also interesting Aston Villa

Aston Villa are reportedly monitoring Espanyol’s highly-rated Spanish goalkeeper Joan García, as the Premier League side looks to strengthen its squad ahead of a busy 2025–26 campaign that could include European football. García, 23, has caught the attention of several clubs across Europe with his commanding performances in La Liga and Spain’s second tier, and Villa are believed to be among the latest to express serious interest.

According to sources close to the player, García’s name has been discussed at recruitment meetings within the Villa hierarchy, with scouts said to be impressed by his reflexes, composure, and shot-stopping abilities. Though no formal bid has yet been submitted, Aston Villa are expected to pursue talks in the coming weeks as they assess their goalkeeping options for the new season.

A breakout year for García

Joan García has had a breakthrough season at Espanyol, becoming the club’s undisputed No. 1 and helping the team maintain one of the best defensive records in Spain’s Segunda División. His performances have drawn praise from pundits and coaches alike, with many tipping him as a future candidate for the Spanish national team.

Born in Sallent, Catalonia, García came through the youth ranks at Espanyol and has steadily progressed to the senior squad. While initially playing second fiddle to more experienced keepers, he seized his opportunity this season with a string of assured displays that showcased his athleticism, distribution, and leadership from the back.

Despite Espanyol’s struggles to regain a firm foothold in La Liga, García’s consistency has stood out. His calm presence in high-pressure situations has made him one of the standout goalkeepers in Spanish football outside of the traditional top clubs.

Aston Villa’s goalkeeping situation

Villa manager Unai Emery is reportedly keen to add depth and long-term competition to his goalkeeping department. Emiliano Martínez, the club’s current No. 1, remains a key figure and fan favorite. However, with interest mounting in the World Cup winner from elite European clubs, Villa are planning for all scenarios.

Even if Martínez stays, Villa lack depth behind him. Backup goalkeeper Robin Olsen is now 35 and may be allowed to leave this summer, while younger keepers like Filip Marschall are still considered developmental players. Bringing in a goalkeeper like García would not only provide immediate cover but also serve as an investment in the future.

Unai Emery, who remains well-connected in Spanish football, is said to be aware of García’s talents and open to the idea of integrating him into the squad, particularly with Villa potentially facing a packed schedule next season, including European fixtures.

Espanyol’s stance

Espanyol are reluctant to lose García, especially with his growing importance to the team’s promotion ambitions. However, the club’s financial limitations could force them to consider offers in the region of €12–15 million. García is under contract until 2027, giving Espanyol a strong negotiating position, but interest from Premier League sides could test their resolve.

The player himself is said to be open to a move abroad, especially to a club competing in one of Europe’s top leagues. A transfer to Aston Villa would represent a significant step up and the chance to develop under a respected manager in one of the most competitive leagues in the world.

Looking ahead

While any potential move remains in the early stages, Aston Villa’s interest in Joan García underlines their intent to build a squad capable of sustained success domestically and in Europe. With a combination of youth, potential, and top-level experience, García could be a smart addition to Emery’s evolving project at Villa Park.

As the summer transfer window approaches, García’s name is one to watch—not only for Villa fans, but for any club in need of a rising star between the posts.
