Red Bull Racing has reportedly initiated discreet discussions about securing a new teammate for Max Verstappen in 2026, with early phone calls already hinting at potential recruitment. The second seat at Red Bull has long been a revolving door, plagued by inconsistency and unfulfilled expectations, making it one of the most scrutinized roles in Formula 1.
The current occupant, Yuki Tsunoda, was elevated from Racing Bulls mid-season after Liam Lawson’s abrupt demotion. Yet the Japanese driver has struggled to match the team’s lofty standards, collecting only 20 points compared to Verstappen’s dominant tally. Although team principal Laurent Mekies has stated Tsunoda will not be replaced before year’s end, speculation about his eventual exit appears inevitable.
Several candidates have emerged for the coveted seat, including rising talent Isack Hadjar and a potential recall for Lawson. However, a surprising name has entered the conversation: Alex Albon. Once part of the Red Bull stable, Albon was promoted in 2019 but swiftly replaced by Sergio Pérez a year later. Reports indicate Red Bull sounded out Albon’s availability as early as 2023, with renewed contact in recent weeks. His possible return is said to be encouraged by Chalerm Yoovidhya, Red Bull’s Thai majority shareholder. Consultant Helmut Marko, who allegedly regrets Albon’s departure, is also believed to favor the move. Albon himself has remained reserved on the speculation, though he has openly empathized with Tsunoda’s difficulties, reflecting on his own turbulent stint at Red Bull.
