The MLB and the world of sports lost a legend. Willie Mays passed away at the age of 93 which had everyone around the game mourning the loss of a Hall of Famer. A lot of teams outlined how sad they were to learn of his passing but none were more devastated than his San Francisco, then New York, Giants, and New York Mets families. An avid spectator of black history in sports and baseball in general, Barack Obama, had a few words for the late legend.

Barack Obama wrote a great farewell message after learning of Willie Mays’ passing. The former president got to pick the brain of the former center fielder who played for the Giants and Mets. So, his message started with that. It then ended with a lot of gratitude for what the MLB legend has done for him along with the rest of the world.
Willie Mays wasn’t just a singular athlete, blessed with an unmatched combination of grace, skill and power. He was also a wonderfully warm and generous person – and an inspiration to an entire generation. I’m lucky to have spent time with him over the years, and Michelle and I send our deepest condolences to his family.
Willie Mays thrived while playing in the outfield. He was great while holding the bat. But, his stint with the Mets and Giants saw him enjoy the game more when he was chasing balls. Regardless, he was good wherever the managers played him. To put his greatness into perspective, he led the National League in home runs and stolen bases four times throughout his illustrious career. He wrapped up his 24-year tenure with the MLB with 660 home runs, 338 stolen bases, and 525 doubles.
Barack Obama and other greats who got to meet him were more than lucky to meet the legend from the Giants and Mets system. After all, he pioneered a lot of moves that are still used in the outfield today. More importantly, he was one of the figures who inspired a lot of people of color. This was most true in helping individuals pursue the sport despite the discrimination and vitriol that were cast on them.

It was not just the former President of the United States of America who was affected by this loss. Everyone in the MLB world was shattered to learn of Mays’ passing. So, it was just right for Commissioner Rob Manfred to address the grief that everyone was feeling.
All of Major League Baseball is in mourning today as we are gathered at the very ballpark where a career and a legacy like no other began. Willie Mays took his all-around brilliance from the Birmingham Black Barons of the Negro American League to the historic Giants franchise. From coast to coast in New York and San Francisco, Willie inspired generations of players and fans as the game grew and truly earned its place as our National Pastime.
A legend of the game’s legacy will forever stick with their fans. The Say Hey Kid will always be remembered.
