Cuba fight back to beat Serbia in Belgrade and keep rising

Cuba’s men’s volleyball team produced an inspired comeback on Thursday night in Belgrade, defeating Serbia in front of a passionate home crowd and continuing their impressive rise in the international rankings. The match, part of the ongoing Volleyball Nations League (VNL), saw the Cubans overcome a slow start to secure a dramatic victory that reinforces their reputation as one of the most exciting and unpredictable teams on the circuit.

Serbia, playing on home soil and buoyed by a lively crowd, started strong. They dominated the opening set with aggressive serving and powerful attacks through their star hitters. Cuba struggled to find their rhythm early on, committing unforced errors and giving the Serbians plenty of opportunities to build momentum. Serbia clinched the first set 25-20, raising hopes of a straightforward win.

However, Cuba’s response in the second set showcased exactly why they are a team to watch. Led by captain Robertlandy Simón and explosive outside hitter Miguel Ángel López, the Cubans tightened up their passing and began to find gaps in the Serbian defense. Their serving pressure improved drastically, causing problems for Serbia’s reception. The second set turned into a fierce battle, but Cuba edged it 27-25, leveling the match and silencing the Belgrade crowd.

The third set saw Cuba carry that momentum forward. With powerful spikes, relentless blocks, and remarkable athleticism in defense, the Cubans started to dictate the pace. Serbia, rattled by the sudden shift, tried to regain control but struggled to match Cuba’s energy and efficiency. The visitors took the third set 25-22, moving within touching distance of a famous win.

Serbia, determined not to disappoint their home fans, fought hard in the fourth set, pushing Cuba all the way. The crowd roared every Serbian point, and the hosts even held a slender lead midway through. But Cuba’s resilience shone through once again. Crucial digs, smart setting, and unstoppable attacks from López and Simón turned the tide. In a tense finale, Cuba sealed the fourth set 26-24, sparking wild celebrations among the Cuban players and coaching staff.

This win is another statement of intent from Cuba, whose men’s team has been steadily climbing back to the top tier of international volleyball after years in the wilderness. With a core of talented players blending experience and youth, they are proving they can challenge and beat the traditional powerhouses on any given night.

For Serbia, the loss is a setback, especially at home, but they remain firmly in the hunt for a strong VNL finish. They will look to regroup quickly, as every point is crucial in the run-up to the final rounds.

As for Cuba, this comeback win will boost their confidence further and send a message to other top sides: underestimate them at your peril. Their next matches will be watched closely as they aim to maintain this upward trajectory and possibly spring more surprises before the VNL concludes.

For volleyball fans, Cuba’s resurgence is a welcome storyline—an explosive, fearless team capable of thrilling comebacks and breathtaking plays. Their victory in Belgrade is another chapter in their return to prominence, and if they keep fighting like this, they could be the dark horses of the tourn

ament and beyond.
