Edgar Berlanga ended up in hospital after brutal blow to the head after fight against Hamzah Sheeraz

Edgar Berlanga ended up in the hospital after suffering a brutal blow to the head during his highly anticipated fight against Britain’s rising star, Hamzah Sheeraz. What was supposed to be Berlanga’s chance to make a definitive statement in the super middleweight division instead turned into a night of pain, concern, and serious questions about his future in boxing.

Berlanga, known for his early knockout power and flamboyant personality, entered the ring on Saturday night determined to derail Sheeraz’s fast-rising momentum. The matchup was billed as a true test for both men: Berlanga, the American with Puerto Rican roots and a reputation for power, versus Sheeraz, the technically gifted and rangy Brit making waves in the 168-pound weight class.

The fight started with high energy and a sold-out arena buzzing with anticipation. Berlanga came out aggressively, looking to establish his trademark power early. He landed some meaningful shots in the first round, and for a moment it seemed like Sheeraz might have to weather a storm. But Sheeraz remained composed, using his jab and lateral movement to keep Berlanga at bay. By the third round, Sheeraz had settled into a rhythm, countering Berlanga’s big hooks with precise combinations and sharp uppercuts.

It was in the fifth round that the tide dramatically turned. Berlanga lunged forward with a wide right hook that Sheeraz expertly slipped, responding with a devastating counter right hand that landed flush on Berlanga’s temple. The shot was so clean that Berlanga’s legs buckled instantly. Though he beat the count, he never fully recovered his equilibrium. Sheeraz, sensing his opponent was hurt, unleashed a flurry of punishing blows, backing Berlanga against the ropes and peppering him with body shots and uppercuts that left him dazed.

The referee stepped in and gave Berlanga a standing eight count, but Berlanga’s corner allowed him to continue, hoping he could find his power and turn the fight around. Unfortunately, the damage had already been done. Sheeraz maintained the pressure, landing another vicious right hand to Berlanga’s head in the seventh round, which sent him crashing to the canvas for a second time. This time, the referee waved it off immediately, putting an end to the one-sided beating.

Moments after the fight, Berlanga, clearly disoriented, was escorted back to his corner, where he complained of dizziness and blurred vision. Ringside doctors quickly evaluated him and decided not to take any chances. Berlanga was stretchered out of the arena and taken to a nearby hospital for further observation and scans. Reports later confirmed that he suffered a mild concussion but, fortunately, no signs of a brain bleed or long-term damage were found.

Berlanga’s hospitalization has sparked concern among fans and pundits alike about his fighting style and career trajectory. Once touted as boxing’s next big knockout artist with a string of first-round KOs early in his career, Berlanga’s vulnerabilities have become more apparent as he has faced stiffer competition. Critics have pointed out his defensive lapses, his tendency to load up on power punches, and his struggles to adjust when facing technically superior opponents.

On the flip side, Hamzah Sheeraz’s stock has skyrocketed. The British fighter not only cemented himself as a legitimate threat at super middleweight but also showcased the kind of poise and ring IQ that separates elite contenders from mere punchers. Sheeraz dedicated his victory to his team and fans but was quick to express his concern for Berlanga’s health, stating in the post-fight interview that he hoped for a full and speedy recovery for his opponent.

As Berlanga recovers, the conversation will inevitably turn to what’s next for him. Will he be able to come back from this kind of punishing loss? Will he take time off to refine his skills and tighten up his defense? Or will this brutal defeat mark the beginning of the end for a fighter who, not so long ago, was seen as the future of the division?

Boxing is a sport that can turn heroes into cautionary tales overnight. Berlanga’s trip to the hospital is a stark reminder of the dangers fighters face every time they step into the ring. For now, the priority is his health and recovery. His team will have to decide whether he needs to take an extended break, change trainers, or even consider moving down a level in competition to rebuild his confidence and technique.

Meanwhile, the super middleweight division continues to heat up, with Sheeraz now demanding respect and bigger opportunities. As fans wait for updates on Berlanga’s condition, they can only hope this frightening episode becomes a turning point — a lesson for Berlanga to evolve his style and protect himself better in a sport where one punch can

change everything.
