Marc Cucurella on Lifting the Conference League: ‘It’s a Present for the Fans!’

As the final whistle blew in Athens, signaling Chelsea’s triumph in the UEFA Europa Conference League, Marc Cucurella dropped to his knees in celebration. For the Spanish full-back, who had endured a turbulent journey since arriving at Stamford Bridge, the victory meant more than just silverware—it symbolized resilience, unity, and above all, a gift to the fans who had stood by the team through thick and thin.

Speaking to reporters in the euphoric aftermath, Cucurella was candid and emotional. “It’s a present for the fans,” he declared, his voice thick with feeling. “They’ve been with us every step of the way, even when things weren’t going well. This is for them.”

Chelsea’s road to Conference League glory wasn’t without its challenges. The club, accustomed to fighting for Champions League honors, found itself in Europe’s third-tier competition after a difficult domestic campaign the previous year. Critics questioned their motivation, pundits doubted their commitment, and fans were split—some embracing the chance to win silverware, others disappointed at the step down.

But within the club, there was a determination to turn the narrative around. Managerial changes had brought new energy, and players like Cucurella, often scrutinized during tough spells, found fresh inspiration. “We knew this was a chance to build something again,” Cucurella said. “To give the fans some joy and to remind ourselves what it means to win.”

Cucurella, known for his tireless running and passionate displays, was a standout performer throughout Chelsea’s European campaign. From tenacious defending in hostile away legs to marauding runs down the left flank, he embodied the fight Chelsea fans craved. In the final against Fiorentina, it was Cucurella’s precise cross in extra time that led to the winning goal—an assist that perfectly encapsulated his contribution.

“This is why we play,” he said. “Not just for ourselves, but for the badge, for the people who sing our names, who travel thousands of miles, who dream with us.”

For many fans, Cucurella’s words resonated deeply. His journey to this point had not been easy. After a high-profile move from Brighton in 2022, expectations were sky-high. Yet, like many of Chelsea’s acquisitions during that era, he struggled for consistency amid the club’s managerial instability and shifting tactics. Injuries, criticism from media and fans alike, and even questions over his place in the squad tested his mental strength.

“Of course, there were tough moments,” he admitted. “You doubt yourself, you hear the noise, but I tried to stay focused. I worked hard every day, trusted the process, and believed the good moments would come.”

Those good moments arrived under a more settled Chelsea side that gradually found its identity. In the Conference League, players like Cucurella became pivotal—not only for their performances but for their leadership and connection with the fanbase. His passion, visible in every celebration, tackle, and rallying gesture, won over even the skeptics.

The Conference League title may not carry the prestige of the Champions League or Premier League, but for Chelsea and Cucurella, it meant everything in that moment. It marked the start of something new—a potential turning point for a team rebuilding its legacy and reconnecting with its fans.

“This trophy isn’t small to us,” Cucurella insisted. “It’s a big step. Winning brings belief. It brings confidence to the team. We’re proud of it. And it shows we are hungry for more.”

Indeed, for younger players coming through and for those reestablishing their footing, the win offered invaluable experience. It also gave fans a chance to dream again—to feel part of a journey with tangible milestones. And for players like Cucurella, it reaffirmed why they wear the shirt.

Looking ahead, Cucurella emphasized that this is just the beginning. “We want more. This is not the end—it’s the start. Next season, we fight for bigger things. But we take this with us, and we remember what it took to get here.”

In many ways, lifting the Conference League served as a redemption story—not just for individuals, but for a club navigating its way back to prominence. And for Marc Cucurella, it was a personal triumph as well as a heartfelt tribute.

“We did this together—with the fans. It’s theirs as much as ours. And hopefully, it’s the first of many more to come.”

For a player who once faced uncertainty over his future at Chelsea, Cucurella’s joy in that moment was uncontainable—and entirely deserved. In lifting the Conference League trophy, he didn’t just win a medal. He won back the fans, and perhaps, a fres

h chapter in his Chelsea story.
