Memphis Grizzlies All-Rookie Center Zach Edey Re-Sprains Left Ankle, Will Undergo Surgery and Likely Miss Start of 2025–26 Season

In a major setback for both the Memphis Grizzlies and their promising young center, Zach Edey, the team confirmed earlier this week that the 7-foot-4 All-Rookie selection has re-sprained his left ankle during an offseason workout. The injury, which is reportedly more serious than initially believed, will require surgical intervention to restabilize the joint. As a result, Edey is expected to miss the beginning of the 2025–26 NBA season.

The news is a tough blow for the Grizzlies, who saw flashes of brilliance from Edey during his rookie campaign. After being drafted in the 2024 NBA Draft, Edey quickly adjusted to the professional level, using his imposing frame and interior dominance to make an immediate impact on both ends of the court. His play earned him a spot on the NBA All-Rookie First Team, making him one of the key young cornerstones for the franchise’s future.

A Promising Start Cut Short

Zach Edey entered the league with significant anticipation following a highly decorated college career at Purdue University, where he was a two-time National Player of the Year. Critics questioned whether his traditional low-post style would translate in today’s fast-paced NBA, but Edey proved the doubters wrong with his physicality, rebounding prowess, and efficient scoring around the basket. Throughout his rookie season, he averaged a solid 10.2 points, 7.9 rebounds, and 1.6 blocks per game in just under 23 minutes per contest.

His ability to anchor the defense and control the paint provided Memphis with a different dimension, especially as the team struggled with injuries and inconsistencies in the frontcourt. As the Grizzlies transitioned into a rebuilding phase with a young core led by Ja Morant, Desmond Bane, and Jaren Jackson Jr., Edey’s development became a bright spot and a focus for the team’s long-term strategy.

Injury History Raises Concerns

Unfortunately, this is not the first time Edey has dealt with issues surrounding his left ankle. He initially sprained the same ankle during the final weeks of the regular season but returned in time for limited action during the team’s final games. The decision to resume workouts early in the offseason appears to have led to a recurrence of the injury.

According to team medical staff, the surgery is aimed at providing a more permanent solution by restabilizing the weakened ligaments and reinforcing the ankle’s structural integrity. The timeline for recovery has not been precisely outlined, but sources close to the organization suggest that Edey may not return to full basketball activities until November or December, meaning he could miss the first 15 to 25 games of the upcoming season.

Team Reaction and Strategic Implications

The Grizzlies’ front office expressed disappointment in the setback but reaffirmed their confidence in Edey’s long-term future. Head coach Taylor Jenkins stated, “Zach is a hard worker and has been incredibly dedicated to his development. While this injury is a hurdle, we’re committed to supporting him through recovery and look forward to getting him back stronger.”

In the short term, the Grizzlies will likely explore depth options at the center position. With Steven Adams no longer on the roster and Brandon Clarke also coming off injury issues, Memphis may consider bringing in a veteran big man through free agency or a short-term trade. There is also an opportunity for younger players like Santi Aldama or second-year forward GG Jackson to earn more minutes in the rotation.

Looking Ahead

Injuries are an unfortunate reality in professional sports, particularly in the NBA where the physical demands on players are immense. For a player of Edey’s size, lower-body durability is especially crucial. The Grizzlies will no doubt be cautious with his return, prioritizing long-term health over a rushed comeback.

Despite this setback, Edey’s rookie campaign laid a strong foundation for what could still be a highly successful NBA career. His size, touch around the rim, and defensive instincts are rare in today’s league. With proper rehab and medical care, there’s optimism that he can return to full strength and resume his upward trajectory.

As the 2025–26 season approaches, fans in Memphis will have to exercise patience. But if Zach Edey can recover and continue his development, the Grizzlies may very well have a future All-Star anchoring their

frontcourt for years to come.
