Olivia Smith: Arsenal signs Liverpool striker for world-record women’s fee

In a groundbreaking moment for women’s football, Arsenal have shattered the transfer record by signing Liverpool’s prolific striker Olivia Smith for a reported world-record fee. The transfer marks a defining chapter in the evolution of the women’s game, highlighting the rapid growth in investment, audience, and ambition across Europe’s top leagues.

Olivia Smith, only 24, has quickly risen through the ranks to become one of the most feared forwards in English football. Known for her lightning pace, clinical finishing, and relentless work rate, she played a pivotal role in Liverpool’s resurgence over the past two seasons. Her 26 goals and 11 assists in the Women’s Super League (WSL) last season turned heads, not only solidifying her as Liverpool’s top scorer but also attracting interest from elite clubs across Europe.

The reported fee, believed to be in excess of £500,000, surpasses the previous world record set when Keira Walsh moved from Manchester City to Barcelona in 2022. While that fee was a milestone then, Smith’s transfer underscores just how quickly the landscape is changing. Arsenal’s willingness to invest at this level demonstrates both their commitment to reclaiming domestic dominance and the club’s vision for competing consistently at the highest level in Europe.

For Arsenal, this signing could not have come at a better time. The Gunners have been rebuilding their women’s squad in recent seasons, aiming to dethrone Chelsea and Manchester City, who have dominated the WSL title race in recent years. Manager Jonas Eidevall has made no secret of his desire to add world-class talent to a squad already brimming with stars like Vivianne Miedema, Beth Mead, and Leah Williamson. The addition of Smith provides Arsenal with an extra dimension up front — a striker who can stretch defences, convert half-chances, and link play with technical midfielders.

Speaking after the announcement, Eidevall praised Smith’s mentality and her impact on the pitch: “Olivia is a player we have admired for a long time. Her work ethic, her instinct in front of goal, and her hunger to keep improving make her a perfect fit for our vision. She’s still young, but she already plays with maturity and fearlessness.”

The record-breaking deal is also a testament to how seriously Arsenal’s hierarchy takes the women’s side. The club’s owners and board have increasingly backed the women’s team with infrastructure upgrades, expanded coaching staff, and marquee signings. Emirates Stadium hosted several women’s fixtures last season, attracting record-breaking crowds for domestic games. Such investment indicates that the gap between men’s and women’s club football — at least at elite clubs — is steadily narrowing, both financially and culturally.

For Liverpool, the loss of Smith will sting, but insiders suggest the club has been preparing for this possibility. The Reds are believed to have a shortlist of potential replacements, with some funds from the record fee expected to be reinvested immediately to maintain their upward trajectory. Liverpool manager Matt Beard acknowledged the magnitude of Smith’s departure but stressed that the club is focused on building sustainably: “Olivia’s move is a proud moment for her and for us as a club. We wish her all the success at Arsenal. This fee reflects her quality and the value of our program in developing top talent. We’ll continue to invest in our squad and our academy to produce more players like her.”

Off the pitch, Smith’s move is likely to fuel more conversations about the commercial potential of women’s football. With record attendances, growing sponsorship deals, and increasing broadcast rights revenues, women’s football is no longer an afterthought — it is becoming a central piece of the football business. Big-money moves like this help prove that investment pays dividends, creating role models for young girls and expanding the sport’s global reach.

For Smith herself, this transfer is a dream realized. Speaking in her first interview as an Arsenal player, she expressed her excitement and gratitude: “It’s an honour to join a club with so much history and ambition. Arsenal’s support for women’s football is unmatched, and I can’t wait to play in front of the fans, work with Jonas and my new teammates, and hopefully bring a lot of goals and trophies to North London.”

Smith’s arrival at Arsenal sets the stage for an exhilarating WSL season ahead. Fans can look forward to a fresh chapter in the fierce rivalry between Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City, and Manchester United. If Smith lives up to expectations, her goals could prove decisive in what promises to be one of the most competitive title races in recent memory.

Beyond the pitch, this record fee sends a message: women’s football is big business, and its best players are finally being valued closer to what they’re worth. Olivia Smith’s move is more than just a transfer — it’s a signal that the ceiling for the women’s game keeps rising, and t

he world is watching.
