Victor Osimhen is one of world football’s best No.9s – so how has he ended up committing his best years to Galatasaray?!

Victor Osimhen’s story has always been one of defiance and steady rise. From the dusty streets of Olusosun, Lagos to Lille and then to Napoli where he blossomed into one of Europe’s most feared strikers, the Nigerian forward has built a reputation as a modern No.9 – strong, aggressive, lightning quick and ruthlessly clinical. So when news broke that Osimhen is set to commit his peak years to Galatasaray, eyebrows were understandably raised across the football world.

This is a player who, not too long ago, was a reported target for Manchester United, Chelsea, PSG and even Real Madrid. Napoli valued him so highly that only an astronomical fee could have prised him away. His Scudetto-winning heroics – scoring 26 Serie A goals to lead Napoli to their first league title in over three decades – sealed his status as an elite striker. In an era where true No.9s are becoming rarer, Osimhen looked destined for one of Europe’s absolute top five or six clubs. So what changed? How does a striker of his calibre find himself swapping the Champions League knockout stages and the glamour of Serie A for the relative obscurity of Turkish football?

First, the obvious context: Napoli’s stormy recent seasons. The same club that adored him also seemed stuck in transition. Aurelio De Laurentiis, the club’s notoriously hard-nosed president, made no secret that he expected any interested buyer to meet Osimhen’s €120 million-plus valuation. Despite interest from Premier League clubs, none were prepared to pay up, especially with Osimhen’s injury record and wage demands. After a breakdown in contract negotiations and a public fallout over a TikTok video mocking him, the relationship soured. Staying became awkward; a fresh start was inevitable.

But why Galatasaray? Why not Saudi Arabia, where lucrative wages are turning heads across Europe? Why not push for a late Premier League move? Here, Galatasaray’s ambition and shrewd negotiation comes into focus. Turkey’s biggest club has quietly built a reputation as a haven for high-profile names wanting to resurrect or redefine their careers. They’ve pulled off surprise coups before – Didier Drogba, Wesley Sneijder, Mauro Icardi. This time, they offered Osimhen more than just a bumper salary. They sold him a project: a chance to become the face of Turkish football, the superstar who returns Galatasaray to serious European relevance.

Galatasaray’s pitch reportedly included guarantees of squad reinforcements, Champions League ambitions, and a leadership role both on and off the pitch. For Osimhen, who thrives on responsibility and adoration, the idea of being an undisputed main man rather than one of many big egos at a European giant might have appealed. Add to that a salary rumoured to rival what he might have earned in Saudi Arabia, without the stigma of ‘selling out’ his prime years, and the move begins to make more sense.

Of course, the risk is huge. The Turkish Super Lig does not carry the prestige of Serie A, let alone the Premier League or La Liga. Even if Galatasaray qualify for the Champions League, they are unlikely to be true contenders for the trophy. For a striker of Osimhen’s prime ability, playing week in, week out against lower-level domestic competition could dull his edge. He’s 26 now – these are the years that should cement his legacy among the elite.

There is also the national team angle. Nigeria will need a fully firing Osimhen for the 2026 World Cup and the next AFCONs. Playing in Turkey, away from the constant spotlight and the highest level of domestic competition, might reduce the sharpness needed when he lines up for the Super Eagles.

Yet, maybe Osimhen knows what he wants better than the critics do. For a boy who fought tooth and nail to reach the top, the stability of a lucrative, guaranteed role as a hero might be worth more than fighting for a place among Europe’s Galácticos. Perhaps he’s seen enough of the cut-throat nature of Europe’s super-clubs – where loyalty is fleeting, and a run of injuries can relegate you to the bench overnight.

In truth, the only certainty is that this decision will define his legacy. If he lights up Istanbul, drags Galatasaray deep into Europe and continues banging in goals for Nigeria, he’ll be hailed as a trailblazer who defied the script. But if the goals dry up, if the Champions League adventures end in early group stage exits and the big clubs stop calling, this move might forever be looked back on as the moment one of football’s great No.9s stepped away from the very summit – just when he was meant to plant his flag there for good.

For now, Turkish football has its new king. And Victor Osimhen has a new empire to conquer – in his own,

unpredictable way.
