Wings’ Paige Bueckers (illness) out despite clearing concussion protocol

Dallas Wings rookie guard Paige Bueckers may have finally cleared the WNBA’s concussion protocol, but she’ll remain sidelined—this time due to an unrelated illness. The announcement comes ahead of the Wings’ matchup against the Minnesota Lynx on Sunday, June 8, 2025 .

—

🧠 Injury Timeline & Impact

Bueckers entered the concussion protocol following a May 29 loss to the Chicago Sky, citing a headache after the contest . That game also featured one of the Wings’ few strong efforts early this season, with Bueckers logging 15 points, eight assists, five rebounds, three steals, and three blocks over 36 minutes before exiting .

Despite being cleared on Saturday, the Wings listed Bueckers as “out” again on Sunday’s injury report due to the illness—making it at least her fourth straight missed game .

—

🏀 Statistical Snapshot

Leading up to her absence, Bueckers had played six games, averaging:

14.7 points per game

6.7 assists

4.5–4.7 rebounds

Shooting approximately 43.7% from the field

She also led Dallas to its lone win of the season, dropping 21 points on 80% shooting in their May 27 victory over the Connecticut Sun .

—

🌪 Team Performance without Bueckers

The Wings have struggled mightily in her absence:

Streak of three consecutive losses during her concussion stint

Record has fallen to 1–8

Mostly bottom of the WNBA standings

Game after game, the Wings have shown flashes—like leading at halftime or entering the fourth quarter with a lead—but have consistently faltered down the stretch, from late-game meltdowns to cold offensive stretches .

—

📉 The Role of Other Guard Absences

Hanging over all this is the absence of Tyasha Harris, the veteran point guard. She suffered a knee injury on May 27 and hasn’t played since, which combined with Bueckers’ unavailability has left the Wings lacking in traditional point guard depth .

Coach Chris Koclanes has leaned on DiJonai Carrington and rookie JJ Quinerly, but neither offers a full-time solution at the point in these crucial minutes .

🔍 Individual & Team Development

1. Paige Bueckers:

A rookie adjusting to pro-level physicality and schedule while living up to No. 1 pick expectations .

Already showing glimpses of future stardom, but her inconsistency and health issues are limiting her impact.

2. Arike Ogunbowale:

Alternating between dominance (37-point game on May 29) and quiet outings with just eight points in others .

Adjusting to a shared offensive role while balancing ball distribution and efficiency.

3. Team Dynamics:

A rookie coach, evolving backcourt, and injury-plagued roster have all contributed to early season struggles.

Highlights include solid defensive stretches, but offensive consistency remains elusive .

🔭 What Comes Next?

Return Chances: With concussion protocol officially cleared, Bueckers could see action as soon as Wednesday, June 11, against the Phoenix Mercury .

Reintegration Process: Coach Koclanes will likely ease her back in to monitor recovery from illness and workload levels.

Verdict on Rookie Century: Though she didn’t secure Rookie of the Month in May, she remains a front-runner for Rookie of the Year if she can stay healthy .

Team Adjustments: The Wings need more reliable late-game execution—stronger defensive rotations, cleaner shot selection, and disciplined ball control .

🎯 Final Takeaway

Paige Bueckers’ health has proven more than just a headline. Her concussion, subsequent illness, and Tyasha Harris’ knee issues have left Dallas without traditional playmaking—especially in crunch time. Although Bueckers is doubtlessly a cornerstone for the Wings, her absence spotlights how fragile a young roster can struggle when missing key pieces.

Her return—timed carefully post-illness and protocol—offers hope not just for improved stats, but for leadership, court cohesion, and perhaps the turnaround a 1–8 start demands. Whether the Wings stabilize depends on integrating her and Ogunbowale, getting health from Harris, and tightening execution overall.

📌 Watch for…

Bueckers’ return on June 11 against Phoenix.

Performance metrics: scoring, assists, efficiency, minutes.

Team turnaround signs: closing out games, fourth-quarter discipline, win/loss improvements.

Despite the rough start, Dallas still controls its destiny. Buecke

rs’ presence—both literally and figuratively—could be the spark they need to re-enter the WNBA race.
