Four-star 2025 IMG Academy linebacker Gavin Nix told Tom Loy of 247Sports that he likes the direction the Miami football program is moving in and the player development of the Hurricanes. Nix discussed his recruitment by Florida State, Miami and Oregon with Loy in an article posted on Monday.
Florida State, Miami and Oregon have edged ahead of Alabama Florida, Notre Dame and many others per Loy. Miami will receive the first official visit from Nix the weekend of June 7. Nix will visit Oregon the weekend of June 14 and Florida State beginning on June 21.
Loy reported that Nix is contemplating adding a fourth visit and that he will commit before the beginning of his senior season. No 247Sports crystal balls have been logged for Nix. The On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine seems outdated with its projections of which program Nix will commit to.
Florida is listed as the favorite for a commitment from Nix with a 28.5 percent chance, Florida State is second at 22.2 percent, Miami is third at 16.7 percent and Oregon is third at 6.1 percent. Loy projects Florida State, Miami and Oregon as the favorites, but other programs are still involved in Nix’s recruitment.

“Throughout the staff changes, the love has been consistent. I love their vision. They are most definitely on the right direction as far as a program. They are moving in the right direction. As far as coach D-Nic, a lot of it really starts with him. He’s a great coach. He’s really passionate about the game. His development with his guys last year was tremendous. Just being able to see his development and the program’s development, where they are trying to go, I think they have a very bright future. That was the main points for me to keep this relationship going.”

Derek Nicholson succeeded Charlie Strong as LB coach for Miami during the 2023 offseason. Nicholson is leading the Miami recruitment. Former Miami head coach, defensive coordinator and LB Randy Shannon is leading the recruitment for Florida State. Nicholson is a former FSU LB.
Four-star prospect Elijah Melendez is the only LB committed to the 2025 class. Nix is the 159th-ranked prospect, 20th LB and 23rd player in Florida in the 2025 class. Tight end commit Brock Schott, the 143rd-ranked prospect is the only 2025 Miami commit ranked ahead of Nix.
